Glue Lined Heat Shrink Tubing - Insulating Electrics Against Water

Glue lined heat shrink tubing, also known as adhesive lined heat shrink tubing, is a slightly modified version of traditional heat shrink tubing, which is used mainly for insulation of electrical cabling. However, it has one additional, important feature; a layer of thermoplastic adhesive. The tubing is produced with an outer tubing made from Polyolefin and a hot-melt adhesive inner lining. This inner layer of glue gives the tubing better sealant and adhesion properties.

These additional properties make glue lined heat shrink tubing better suited to specific applications and environments than normal heat shrink tubing

For instance, the tubing is considerably thicker than normal heat shrink tubing. Obviously this inhibits its use in more detailed applications, however it offers a far more secure and permanent method of insulating thicker and heavier cables.

An arguable downside of this is it is less flexible than the standard tubing, but because of this rigidity, it doesn't tend to coil with the wire like smaller heat shrink. This adds to its suitability to heavier electrical installations.

There are certain environments that glue lined heat shrink tubing lends itself well to and one notable area is the marine industry. As it possesses excellent sealant properties, it is perfect for the insulation and sealing of electrical and mechanical components against water or moisture. Additionally, it's ideal for effective moisture resistance where there are electrical connections and splices.

For example, a butt connector is frequently used when repairing a boat's electrical equipment. These connectors help maximise current flow and protect against corrosion and they also use glue-lined heat shrink tubing to help seal out the water. Moreover, the heavy duty tubing has the added advantage of relieving some mechanical strain.

Other environments that adhesive lined heat shrink tubing is widely used in are the automotive and electrical industries; mainly for general electrical insulation, mechanical protection and harness/cable bundling.

Heat Shrink Tubing: What it is, How to Use it, and How to Choose it

What it is…

Heat shrink tubing is exactly what its name indicates: it is tubing that shrinks when heat is applied. It can be used for a wide range of purposes and can be helpful for doing both preventative maintenance and making repairs.

How to use it…

Heat shrink tubing can be used many different ways. Common preventative maintenance applications include relieving strain, providing additional insulation, and sealing the cable.

When heat shrink tubing is applied to terminals or connectors, it can help relieve physical stress caused by flexing and bending. While flexing and bending can damage insulation and even the cable's conductor, a layer of heat shrink tubing helps the cable withstand impact, even in cables with built-in strain relief. For more challenging flex applications, requiring firmer strain relief, semi-rigid heat shrink tubing is recommended.

Not only can heat shrink tubing provide additional strain relief, but it can also provide extra insulation. Heat shrink tubing has great electrical qualities which makes it ideal for use with connections, terminations, and circuit board applications requiring additional environmental and electrical protection.

Heat shrink tubing also provides an extra layer of protection for the cable by working as a sealer. It can be placed over substrates, connections, joints, and gaps to protect them from moisture, chemicals, and dust. Tubing defends against environmental hazards by providing UV, oxidation, corrosion, and abrasion resistance as well.

Although heat shrink tubing can be utilized in many preventative maintenance applications, it can also be extremely helpful when making repairs. Whether the fixes are temporary or permanent, heat shrink tubing can be used to cover damaged cable jackets, insulation, connections, or cable splices. It makes for a quick and easy fix while you wait for the cable to be replaced, but it also works effectively enough to serve as a permanent repair in some cases.

When making repairs to the jacket or insulation, be sure to check that the rest of the cable is undamaged. Look to see that the conductor and any insulation between individual conductors are intact to avoid shorts.

Finally, heat shrink tubing can simply be used to make life a little easier. It can bundle and organize cables or just mark circuits for easy cable identification. Heat shrink tubing is available in a wide variety of colors and can be printed with permanent labels, so marking circuits is simple.

How to choose it…

There are several factors to consider when choosing heat shrink tubing. Beyond the usual considerations of temperature and voltage ratings, environmental hazards, and other application requirements involved in choosing cable products, heat shrink tubing requires attention to a few more details.

First are sizing requirements necessary to ensure that the heat shrink will fit snugly in its application and work the most effectively. The sleeve diameter is crucial in heat shrink tubing. The tubing must be large enough in its original state to fit over any large or irregular surfaces, but it must also have a final diameter small enough to ensure that it will shrink to fit tightly around those parts. That is where the shrink ratio comes in.

The shrink ratio indicates how small the tubing will become once heat is applied. These ratios usually range from 6:1 to 2:1. For tubing with a 2:1 ratio, the final product will be half of its original size once it is heated. Tubing with a 6:1 ratio, in its original state, will be six times larger than the final size of the tubing after it is shrunk. These high shrink ratios leave room for irregular parts, allowing the tubing to slide over large objects while shrinking enough for a snug fit over smaller sections. This is important to ensure that the heat shrink provides an adequate fit and an effective seal.

Other considerations are wall thickness and rigidity. Requirements for these depend on the individual application. Stiff tubing with thick walls may be necessary for applications where extreme durability and strain relief are primary concerns. For other applications, thin walled or less rigid tubing may be perfectly adequate.

Another thing to consider when choosing heat shrink is how the tubing will be heated. Consider adding a heat gun to your order. Heat guns are recommended because they provide control over temperature and air flow. However, butane torches may also be used to apply heat. Ideally, heat is applied evenly over the entire surface of the tubing.

The shrink temperature also varies from material to material, so be sure to check that the temperature is realistic for each application.

Though these are all important things to consider when choosing heat shrink tubing, it is a tool well worth the thought. It can be helpful in many situations, from big projects to small details, from important factory repairs to simple circuit marking.

New Power Tube Make-up Air System

Industrial Pressure Blower Co. designs different kinds of industrial and commercial air moving equipment. It developed a PT Power Tube Make-Up Air System - one of the most economical options for larger industrial plants ventilation air make up systems.

PT Air Make-Up fan system is a new ventilation concept. It utilizes some aerodynamic principles for supplying, tempering and distributing make-up air in a building in cold weather. It offers more efficiency, economy and comfort than most conventional make-up air units.

When exhaust fans are used to provide ventilation, both for industrial and process exhaust and personnel comfort, a negative air pressure is created within the building. This negative pressure causes several problems:

- Process exhaust systems are less efficient and may not work properly.
- Down flow can occur through gravity vents and result in the back venting of products of combustion from flues and stacks of heaters and process equipment.
- Drafts are created that are a dsicomfort to employees. Safe operating of outside doors may even be impaired.

Our Power Tube Fan Make-Up Air System solves all of these problems economically, even on the coldest winter day.

PT Fan System consists of a specially designed air supply fan, a wall housing and a motorized air inlet damper. A long polyethylene tubing is attached to the unit and extends horizontally inside building supported from wire. It has precision holes punched on both sides at specific intervals along its length and has an opposed end closed off.

Each fan housing assembly is mounted in the outside wall opening or connected to a roof air supply fan.

In the winter, conventional make-up air systems have to heat the cold outside air prior to introduction into the building. This is an expensive process in both equipment and continuing energy cost. The Power Tube Fam Make-Up Air System is a simplier system that utilizes waste building heat and basic earodynamic principles for supplying, tempering and distributing make-up air. And that makes it less expensive than conventional make-up air systems to purchase, to install and to operate.

When make-up air is needed, the motorized inlet shutter opens, the supply fan turns on and supplied fresh outside air inflating the tube for its full length. The air discharges from the punched holes in the tube located overhead as small high velocity jets which create turbulent mixing with the warmer inside air. As a result the outside air is effectively tempered before it reaches the worker level, creating a uniform draft free make up air system.

Normally several PT Fan systems are required for a building, depending on the size of the building, volume of make-up air required, size of PT Fan models selected. Additional heating, if required, may be furnished from conventional type space unit heaters positioned near the distributing PT tubes.

Industrial Pressure Blower Co. PT Air Make-Up System has the following advantages over coventional make-up air units:

* Offers savings in initial investment and operating costs;
* Provides draft-free and uniform air distribution from along tube rather than blasting air from a single source outlet;
* Uses less energy due to lower horsepower for the same supplied air volume and because of friction loss of blowing air through a heat transfer system is completely eliminated;
* Easier and less costly to install, as PT Fan system is relatively light in weight ans the polyethylene tubing can be installed in a fraction of time normally required for conventional ventilation ducts;

Power Tube Make-Up Air Fans are available in Sizes 18 to 48 for for air flows up to 40,000 CFM.

PT Power Tube Make-Up Air System tube is constructed of thick woven high density polyethylene fiber(8 x laminated with poly coating to a thickness of 6 Mils. It is 3.8 oz. per square yeard material. Burst strength is 118 Lbs per square inch. The material is flame retardant and complied with NFPA Standard 701. Tubes are available in two colors: blue and white. One end of the polyethylen tube is factory dealed.

Sufficient make-up air should be provided to balance exhaust from general ventilation and process ventilation. Usually several Power Tube Fans will be required, located to distribute air throughout the plant. If additional tempering of make-up air in specific plant areas becomes necessary, unit heaters can be added.
