Benzoyl Peroxide & Acne
Benzoyl Peroxide is commonly used to treat cases of mild acne as well as cases of moderate acne. Many times one will find benzoyl peroxide contained within things such as cleansing liquid, lotions, creams, skin gels, cleansing bars. Often any product with benzoyl peroxide advises twice-a-day application. For any new users, once per day is the advised starting dosage so that one can gauge how their skin reacts to benzoyl peroxide. If the skin begins peeling, then lessen the applications, however, if it does not seem to be working, increasing the applications is best. Each package containing a benzoyl peroxide product will also include directions. If the product was prescribed by a doctor, the label will include instructions which should accompany those given by the pharmacist or doctor.
Benzoyl Peroxide cleansing products should be used once or twice daily to wash the affected areas. If one is using any lotions, creams, or gels, the affected area(s) should be washed first, and then patted dry using a towel. Once this is done, the benzoyl peroxide can be applied and gently rubbed in. There are times when benzoyl peroxide products can take between four and six weeks to begin showing results and improvement. Should this not occur, then additional steps should be taken by a doctor. It is important not to get benzoyl peroxide into the eyes, nose, or mouth, and should not be used on children who are under twelve years of age.
Prior to using benzoyl peroxide, one should contact their physician to ensure that there are no allergies to the product. Make sure that the physician is aware of any other prescriptions or over-the-counter medications in use so as to ensure nothing conflicts negatively with the benzoyl peroxide. As is the case with most medications, being pregnant, breast-feeding, or planning to become pregnant can interfere with benzoyl peroxide, so notification of any of those three should be given to your doctor.
There are certain side effects which can come with the use of benzoyl peroxide. These include things such as dryness which can lead to the peeling of skin. Some may experience a feeling of warmth, even tingling or stinging in the application location. These are normal symptoms. Should a rash develop, any applied location begins swelling, burning, even itching or if blisters form or redness forms, a physician should be notified so that the situation can be examined and rectified.
When one is storing benzoyl peroxide, it is important to keep any of the medication in its container, sealed tightly to as to avoid overexposure to oxygen. Room temperature is best, especially away from excessive heat or moisture such as in a bathroom. When getting rid of unused benzoyl peroxide, it is important to ensure proper disposal, particularly if the medication was a prescription. This means talk to the physician about proper disposal for prescriptions. For use on external parts of the body only, benzoyl peroxide should be not consumed. The areas being treated with benzoyl peroxide should not be treated with dressings, cosmetics, or other skin medications and lotions unless a physician recommends it. It is important to keep benzoyl peroxide away from clothes and hair, for it will bleach both.
